  • Free “Exercise at Home” Packs for Vulnerable Adults

Free “Exercise at Home Packs” for Vulnerable Adults

Staying active is an important way to keep healthy and resilient to the coronavirus and is so important that the government has identified it as one of the four reasons that people can leave their homes.

However, there are many vulnerable people who are isolating at home and who are also living without access to internet, and therefore unable to access the wealth of online fitness resources and advice.

Active Norfolk is now offering free physical activity packs to support vulnerable adults who are isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic to be active at home.

These packs are specifically designed to support those that are digitally excluded and therefore unable (or unwilling) to access online health resources, although they are suitable for any vulnerable adults needing support to maintain their health and wellbeing at home during this time.

The packs are small and lightweight, containing:

    ·         a guided home exercise booklet;

    ·         a resistance band (yellow, lightest resistance);

    ·         a Sitting Room Circuits DVD which contains a half hour guided walk through of gentle exercises that can be done at home and are suitable for those that currently do little or no exercise; and

    ·         information leaflets with tips on reducing sedentary behaviour and information about a physical activity call-back service for individuals that want tailored 1:1 advice over the phone.

Active Norfolk hope to be able to target distribution to those who are known to be digitally excluded – if that information is known. However, we are happy to provide packs to support all vulnerable adults to be active at home.

To request free packs for your parish or district, please use the online form at https://www.activenorfolk.org/home-exercise-packs-request. We will acknowledge receipt of your request within 2 working days and will notify you when your pack is out for delivery.

Alternatively, contact Kristen Hall at Active Norfolk to discuss your requirements: [email protected] / 07920 407 088

Free exercise telephone support for vulnerable adults

Active Norfolk want to ensure that vulnerable and digitally isolated residents are supported to be physically active.,

A free call-back service is now available through the Norfolk County Council Customer Service line.

People who are vulnerable and without access to internet can call 0344 800 8020 and select Option 5 and speak to someone to request a call back from Active Norfolk.

A qualified physical activity instructor will call them back free of charge and give tailored one-to-one guidance on how they can safely exercise at home.

Please share this information to any residents or groups who may benefit from this service.

  • Mental Health Helpline

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) has set up a 24/7 helpline offering immediate support for mental health difficulties during the coronavirus pandemic.

The freephone service, called First Response, launches at midday tomorrow (Wednesday 15 April). Staffed by mental health professionals from the Trust, it will provide reassurance, self-help advice, support and signposting designed to avoid the need for people to attend hospital, except in the case of a medical emergency.

It will be available to members of the public of any age, regardless of whether or not they are an existing NSFT service user.

The line will also be open to other healthcare professionals such as GPs, ambulance and social care staff who need to make referrals or seek advice when working with people undergoing mental health difficulties.

First Response will be available on 0808 196 3494. Callers will hear a recorded message instructing them to press either 1 or 2, depending on whether they are a professional or member of the public, and will then be connected to a mental health practitioner.

Stuart Richardson, Chief Operating Officer with NSFT, said: “This is an unprecedented time for all of us, which is inevitably causing people anxiety and putting them under additional strain. That is why it is so important to offer as much support as we can.

“This phone line is designed to keep people safe in their homes by providing them with immediate mental health support. We hope that this will be particularly helpful during this period of uncertainty when access to secondary mental health services is unfortunately more limited.

“As well as providing a vital service to members of the public, we hope the helpline will also be a useful resource for our health and social care colleagues, as well as our partners in the police, by offering guidance and advice when they are working with people experiencing mental ill health.”

First Response will be open to anyone in Norfolk or Suffolk. For more information, visit www.nsft.uk/helpline

  • Message from Norfolk Constabulary

Norfolk Constabulary continues to follow its commitment to engage, explain, encourage and enforce the government’s measures restricting people’s movements.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: “We police by consent in this country, and my officers follow a very fair four-step escalation model with the public and businesses.

“Our focus is to reassure, inform and engage with people so they understand why these restrictions are in place. Our communities are looking out for each other and listening to the government’s message to stay at home, and I thank them for that. Complying with these regulations is an absolute priority to save people’s lives and protect our NHS.

“We will always try to disperse people rather than use enforcement but it’s also right that we act against the few who choose to break the rules and disregard these measures, and put people’s lives at risk.”

Officers were given the powers on Thursday (26 March 2020) to fine people who refuse to stay at home and go outside without ‘reasonable excuse’ following the introduction of government measures to tackle Covid-19.

To date (Tuesday 31 March 2020), Norfolk Constabulary has used its formal powers only once following an incident in Great Yarmouth yesterday morning (Monday 30 March 2020) when a woman repeatedly ignored officers’ requests to return home on three separate occasions. The woman, who is aged in her 40s, was reported for the offence and will receive a summons to attend magistrates’ court in due course.

Mr Bailey added: “The majority of people are already making sacrifices to save lives, and we continue to urge everyone to follow the advice that is designed to keep us all safe.

“If people see others flouting the rules we ask that they exercise common sense. We will not be able to dispatch officers for minor infringements. Clearly mass gatherings of people are not a minor infringement and we want to know about these so we can deal with them.

“It’s also important to add that people who deliberately spit and cough on emergency workers as well as members of the public will be dealt with robustly. This is an offence and it will be treated as assault.

“I’d also take this opportunity to pay tribute to all our officers, staff and Special Constables who, alongside emergency workers, NHS staff and other key workers, are on the frontline. They are doing outstanding work in challenging times.”

People are being encouraged to report non-urgent crimes or concerns via online reporting at http://www.norfolk.police.uk/.

Please only dial 999 in an emergency or if you believe a crime to be in progress. Non-urgent crimes can be reported via 101 but where possible we would encourage the public to report matters via our website.

Norfolk Police also regularly updates its social media accounts with the latest news, general advice and guidance on a number of issues, including personal safety, fraud and home security. You can find us on Facebook or Twitter @NorfolkPolice
